I attend monthly support group meetings with other bariatric surgery patients with whom I have formed strong friendships. Safe And Easy Weight Loss Weight Reduction
Nearly a third of adults and 17 percent of children in the U.S. are now obese with 65 million additional cases estimated by 2030. While obesity confers serious health concerns and increased all-cause mortality, the vast majority of deaths are due to cardiovascular causes such as ischemic heart disease and stroke. Researcher prospectively followed 208 overweight or obese patients (BMI ?25 kg/m2) receiving medical/dietary (48 percent) or bariatric surgical (52 percent) weight loss treatment during a period of approximately one year. They measured plasma metabolic parameters and vascular endothelial function using ultrasound at baseline and following weight loss intervention, and stratified analyses by median plasma insulin levels. They found that individuals with higher baseline plasma insulin levels (above median >12 uIU/ml), who had greater than 10 percent weight loss had significantly improved brachial artery macro-vascular flow-mediated vasodilation and micro-vascular reactive hyperemia.

Citing health risks, FDA moves to ban trans fat from processed foods
(Dennis Drenner / For The Times) By Ricardo Lopez November 7, 2013, 7:50 a.m. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday proposed a rule change that would eliminate trans fat from all processed foods in a move the agency said would prevent heart attacks and other heart disease. “While consumption of potentially harmful artificial trans fat has declined over the last two decades in the United States, current intake remains a significant public health concern,” said FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg. The agency has issued a preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils, the main source of artificial trans fat in processed foods, are not “generally recognized as safe.” That assessment is based on a review of scientific evidence and expert scientific testimony, the agency said. Also A brief history of artificial trans fats Food manufacturers would have to prove that trans fat is safe to eat. The Institute of Medicine, an independent agency, has concluded that trans fat provides no known health benefit and that there is no safe level of artificial trans fat. The proposal now has a 60-day comment period to collect more data and give food manufacturers an opportunity to estimate how much time they would need to retool their products.

Christiana Care is expanding its approach to mental health care, and the state has been aggressive in its expansion of community-based care to comply with requirements of a 2011 settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice. The Department of Justice settlement is an important part of the context, because its 2009 investigation found that the “vast majority” of patients at the Delaware Psychiatric Center should be living in the community, not in the state’s largest psychiatric hospital. The state is required to make sweeping reforms to support community-based care. A growing network of service and support is emerging statewide crisis services, drop-in centers, peer supports and mental health services. Still, according to 2012 data from the Kaiser Family Foundation, only about 39 percent of the state’s need is met at current levels.
